I am late with my entry for today, so it will be a shorter one.
But the first thing that I want to tell everyone, is that Lily has just snuggled up to sleep with Merlyn! They have not been friends since the babies were born, because Lily was being a wonderful protective mum. But today, I think she just decided that she needed some ‘adult company’ again, and opened the door to the dining room, and snuggled down with him. The kittens are all asleep together in the lounge, which is also really sweet.
It is such a good feeling to have reached this stage, where they are all growing up, and Merlyn has the company of his best friend again, I feel so happy for them both.
The kittens have enjoyed having the freedom of the lounge and stairs, so much to explore, so much to destroy!!! One of them managed to get inside the leg of a pair of my trousers that were drying on the radiator!
All is quiet for the moment in the house, the calm before the storm later on!! |

Well, the kittens are very much on the move now! Last night, we allowed them to wander down the stairs into the lounge. Fili and Kili were brilliant, running up and down the stairs. I had wondered how they would cope with the stairs, but they just took them with a leap. It worked wonders, because and hour and a half of playing on the stairs and in the lounge, and they were all tired out. So I put them all to bed and slept in my own room for a change! How wonderful and peaceful that felt. And I didn’t hear a sound from the little ones all night. However, when I did get up this morning, and opened up the door, they were FULL of energy! I let them have the run of my room and the rest of upstairs. But they spent all of their time playing under or on my bed.
Lily’s tummy was a little upset this morning. And to spare you the gory details, I will summarize by saying that she insisted on using the small litter trays that I have out for the kitten’s……..and missed every time. So I spend a good half hour cleaning and disinfecting litter trays!!!! Not the best, especially when I was sat outside doing it, with snow falling on me!
Goldberry has just woken up, she is very vocal! Anyhow, this means she wants feeding, so I will leave this entry here, while I go and sort out her lunch. |
| Day 45 |
Well, the little terrors have now been allowed into my bedroom as well, so I hope that the litter training holds up!!! They are currently playing underneath my bed, and by the sounds of it, having a merry old time!!! I knew that underneath my bed would provide a good place to play. There are all sorts of things to get into under there !!
Arwen is developing into quite a character. I would say that she definitely has the strongest personality out of the 6 kittens. Sometimes she seems completely crazy, lots of energy, and I suspect has the potential to be quite naughty when she gets older!! She has certainly asserted herself in this litter, which is all the more special as she was the smallest as birth.
Fili and kili look more like twins everyday, I find it so hard to tell them apart. But there are definite stripings appearing on the tails. They really are lovely little guys.
As I type, they are currently all attacking the coats hanging from my wardrobe handles!!!! It seems to be a great source of entertainment. But looking on the bright side, at least I am no longer getting scratched to bits by them climbing up my legs. |
| Day 44 |
It has been a busy few days since I last wrote. Yesterday the central heating broke down, so I was rushing around sorting that out. Then this morning, on taking the children to school, I discover that someone had left the internal light on and I had a flat battery! Fortunately my mother lives close so she could help out with the lifts. And thank goodness for the AA!!
The kittens are becoming quite a handful! 6 weeks old now, and they think they own the place (probably do in reality!) I have now allowed them out of the bedroom. They also have the landing and the bathroom. I have brought up the large scratching post, which they love. So much better for them now that they can climb. I am amazed at how quickly their little bodies have developed, and how strong they are now. They are becoming the master of escaping!!! I frequently see a very proud kitten diving under my bed, or running down the stairs, rejoicing in the fact that they have outwitted me!!
I am considering setting up the dining room down stairs for them now. I just want to make sure that they are confident enough with the litter trays, I don’t want the act of moving them to start off lots of little ‘accidents’!! But they are just so ready to explore.
They are currently asleep on the large scratching post; no doubt they will all wake up, full of energy and mischief, just as I am ready to have a sit down! |
| Day 41 |
Well, as always it has been such a busy start to the day. It amuses me. The kittens all seem to wait until I get up before they all use the litter tray??? So I stand and wait, clean them all out. Which is Lily’s cue to use the tray, so I clean out AGAIN, and so it goes on. When this process is all finished, I then wade through lots of clinging kittens (fortunately Richard was in the room, so he had some of the babies climbing on him) and sort out food bowls. Then the anti biotics for the three that need them. And all that took me a whole hour! Needless to say that at 11am I have just realised that my youngest son has not had any breakfast!
We went to the vets with the 3 babies who had been poorly this morning, and our vet was very pleased with them. He said that they looked much better, and just wants to check on Arwen in a week’s time for a quick look to see that her scar has healed ok. And that is the painful visit because I have to settle the bill!!!!
They are all so full of energy, at 11pm last night they were still going strong. I am totally exhausted due to lack of sleep. Once they are 9 weeks old I intend to move them downstairs, where it will be easier, they will have more room, and I will then allow them to sleep on their own at night times.
I am posting 3 photos, 1 is of Arwen amongst the teddies, the second one is of Smeagle and the third, where I am in my blue fleece, is of Goldberry (she would not sit still for the camera, right little fidget she was!)

| Day 40 |
It has been a very busy morning, with kittens and children! The children are brilliant at looking after the kittens, but not so good when it comes to litter trays, washing dirty food bowls etc. It took me an hour this morning just to get round to seeing to the kittens. Thank goodness it is half term and there are no school runs to do.
The kittens had a new toy last night, some boxes to play in. They kept them entertained for hours. There was also some tissue paper in one of them, and they loved playing with it. I think that the noise it made intrigued them.
I also gave them some tinned pink salmon, skinless and boneless, they seemed to think that it was pretty yummy! So far their favourite foods seem to be finely chopped up cod (well, the value frozen fish from Tesco's’s, but it seems to be mainly cod), the salmon mentioned above, some kitten biccies and mum’s milk. I do offer them kitten cat food, but they don’t seem too impressed with it! The one cat food that they do quite like, is the Hi Life 70% tuna, diluted with a bit of boiled water. They seem to be developing expensive tastes!
Arwen is doing absolutely fine now, the photo of the kitten on it’s own is Arwen, she is such a pretty girl, with plenty of character. She is a little girl who knows what she wants. It is good to see though, as she was the smallest of the litter when she was born. I spent quite a lot of time sitting with her to make sure that she was feeding. So it is great to see her so robust, especially after what she has been through.
Goldberry has put back on 100gms after her upset tummy. That is a relief. But she will still not touch any solids. I have been topping her up with milk, and today I am going to add some finely crushed James Wellbeloved kitten biscuits. I would like to see her showing more interest in other food by tomorrow. She certainly has plenty of energy; she is just that little bit smaller at the moment.
They are asleep at the moment, so all is calm in the house, apart from my 2 children downstairs, who are currently arguing! Poor Richard is covered with scratches from where the kittens have climbed all over him; his poor back is the worst! I maintain that if we were a water container, we would have leaks everywhere!! |
| Day 39 |
I think I will start today’s entry by describing my greeting as I got out of bed this morning! Lily was sitting up with me for a while, and the kittens were running around. Fortunately, being on a raised bed, I was safe from being ambushed. Perhaps that was why Lily had sought the sanctuary of my bed.
As I bravely climbed down the ladder, I could see 6 pairs of eyes eagerly waiting. It is hard to explain quite what happens as I descend to the floor, I can only describe it as being ‘besieged’! As my feet touch the floor, they start to leap onto my legs……..yes, it hurts, and lots of squealing from me does not deter them. It is impossible to walk as there are kittens hanging from my legs. So I try to crouch down, in an attempt to get to the door to open it. Kittens now scale my back, shoulders, and some still clinging to my ankles. It is nigh impossible to do anything. I think it took me about 10 minutes to actually move the litter trays by the door and open it. Tomorrow morning when I get out of bed, I think I will wear protective clothing!!!
The general health of the kittens seems so much better today. Arwen is just fine. Little Goldberry seems brighter, but she still needs feeding up some more. Lily has been much more settled today and she has been feeding them herself much better. Fili, I have decided has an incredible appetite. He seems to eat absolutely anything that is put down! He is growing into one fine, very confident young lad, who definitely likes his food!
I am taking a brief rest here to write today’s entry, before I take the plunge and go back into the ‘kittens den’, only this time I will have thick trousers on and a very thick fleece!

| Day 38 |
Well, after a day like yesterday, things are slowly returning to normal. I was ambushed on my way out of bed this morning! In my bid to escape the room for a cup of tea and litter tray cleaning implements, I had 4 of them climbing up my dressing gown and perching on my shoulder, another 2 attacking my feet. Every time I tried to move one off, it jumped straight back on before I had time to remove a different one. So I called in reinforcements to peel them off me!
Arwen is full of beans so far this morning. Check up at the vets went well, and her small wound seems to be healing nicely. Smeagle, the boy who had been just slightly sick, is bouncing around as if nothing happened. Goldberry is the weaker of the bunch. I worked hard to re hydrate her yesterday, once her sickness had stopped. And this morning I am giving her extra food to build up her strength. None of the other 3 at the moment have shown any signs, so I am cautiously optimistic that it will stay that way.
They are currently all sleeping, so I have a little peace.
I took a few photographs this morning, one of them fighting together in a heap, one of Arwen (in the hat) and the third was one of those rare moments in the morning when a lot of them were in their bed!
I would just like to add, because I was really proud last night. We took all of them into the vets just to have them checked out, as a precaution. And the very nice vet said what lovely well behaved kittens they were, I could feel myself growing 10 feet tall as I glowed in the pride of my babies. Isn’t it lovely when people say nice things like that.

| Day 37 |
Update on Arwen
I am so relieved to be able to say that my little Arwen is going to be ok. She was in fact operated on at lunchtime today, and I shed a tear or ten for her. It turns out that it was in fact just a slightly inflamed bowel, caused by a tummy infection. So the operation was in fact not necessary. But at least I know that my baby is absolutely fine, and that she can come home to us tonight. The vet had said that it was impossible to be sure until they had operated on her. She is apparently sitting up quite brightly now. She is such a beautiful girl, I cannot wait to cuddle her again later on.
My babies are now just over 5 weeks old. They have had a very busy weekend, eating, sleeping, growing and playing.
Unfortunately however, my little girl Arwen, has become poorly.
My poor little baby was sick throughout the night. She finally stopped at 5.20am . I did ring the vets at midnight, and she said to keep her comfy and bring her into the surgery in the morning.
We have just come back from there. We had to leave her at the vets. They want to x ray her tummy, with a little bit of gas to relax her. The vet thinks that she may have a condition where the gut overlap, or similar, I didn't really take in what she was saying as I was feeling too upset/shocked/tired etc The vet said that if the x ray confirmed this, then she will need surgery. I was reassured that any surgery would correct the condition and that this was not uncommon with kittens.
She felt just too small to leave, and it was hard to walk out of the surgery with dry eyes. I am now waiting anxiously for the vets to ring me. I will try to update this diary later on in the day when I have more news. She was so lively yesterday, bouncing around, eating with no problems. And suddenly she started to be sick.
The rest of the kittens are absolutely fine and are causing havoc as usual. They all leapt out of their bed when I climbed down this morning, with their little eyed wide awake and looking for mischief. Little Arwen was in the bed with me, then I could be with her every time she needed to be sick.
If you are reading my diary, please spare a thought for her, she is so very, very special.
